Title:  Don't Get Caught Driving the School Bus.

Author:  Todd Strasser.

Published:  2000.

Characters:
The main characters are three boys in seventh grade. They break their school rules and never get caught. Their names are Kyle, Wilson, and Dusty. Kyle is the narrator, the smart one, and the leader. Wilson is the creative one and the bad one. Dusty, aka King Calm, makes trouble and gets out of trouble. Kyle is the protagonist.  Dusty and Wilson are Kyle's friend's. Principle Chump is the antagonist.

There are other people who ride on the school bus. Angela Nelson Gear is also known as Amazing Nature Girl and she is very nice. Melody Autumn Sunshine is very smart and the hottest girl at their school. Then there are the five Single Digits, aka the Dwarf Pod. If you have read this book, then you can't forget the dwarfs. They are Farty, Burpy, Sneezy, Sleepy, and Barfy. Farty has stinky gas because his family always eats beans. Burpy is a cute, little girl who burps a lot. Sneezy has a runny nose and often sneezes loudly. Sleepy never listens and never knows what is going on because she sleeps so much. And last of all is Barfy who carries around his own barf bags.

Their bus driver, Sarge, used to drive around a bus full of criminals. Sarge is a character that kind of gets in Kyle's way. When they get to school, their arch enemy, Principal Chum, aka Monkey Breath is there. Monkey Breath has been wanting to catch the three trouble makers for a long time.

Plot:
The story starts somewhere in modern times.  It takes place on a school bus. Kyle and his friends make trouble but never get caught.  Principal Chump, a.k.a. Monkey Breath, has been wanting revenge.  The old bus driver was Grandma. They needed a replacement because one of  Kyle's friends left a wasps' nest in the bus.  You know what happens when there is a wasps nest in the bus and someone is in there too.  Ouch!

Sarge is a character that is the replacement bus diver. Sarge was a man who drove  a prison bus. Sarge usually has a problem  with the Single Digits, so he asks Kyle, Dusty, and Wilson to help him, but they end up making trouble, as usual.  Then, they get tired of Sarge so they try to put an end to this all.  Will they succeed?

The theme of this book is sometimes doing something right can be against the rules.  Like when Sarge
shows Kyle how to drive the bus and he saves the bus from a train by driving it.

  1. When I read this book, I wasn't sure that I liked the way that Kyle and his friends are lauded for doing harmful things. I especially felt sorry for Sarge.
