I have speakers in my ipod, computer, headphones, telephone and our car. They let us listen to music and other sounds. The first speaker was made in1876 by Alexander Graham Bell. He put it in his telephone that he invented. They did not have much speaker quality in the past. But now speakers are fantastic and have better quality sound. Speaker quality is dependent on the size, shape, and materials they are built from.
SIZE:
Speakers come in many different sizes. Different sized speakers make different sounds. A tweeter is a small speaker for high frequency sounds. A woofer loudspeaker is a large speaker for low frequency sounds. High sounds are very short sound waves, and low sounds are very long sound waves. If your speaker is too big, you can put a brick at the bottom to improve the sound quality.
SHAPE:
Speakers can come in many different shapes such as oval, square, rectangle, and flat panel. The shape is important for the speaker quality, because the shape of the speaker can affect the sound. An egg shaped box is the best speaker. Egg shaped boxes are hard to build. Peaks and dips in sound are gotten rid of by rounding the cabinet. Rounded walls make better speakers, because there is less distortion. A square -shaped box is the worst speaker. Sharp edges on the front of the speakers cause distortion. A sealed box can give off more sounds than a flat panel. If the wave length is longer than the flat panel, the panel speaker can not make that certain sound. A rigid, air tight box makes a better speaker, because it can make any sound wave. Thicker walls make better speakers, because there less distortion.
MATERIALS:
The materials for the speaker box and the inner stuffing are important for the speaker quality. The
materials in the speaker that actually generate the sound do not change, but the speaker box and the stuffing materials can be changed. The main parts of a speaker that generate sound are a copper wire, a paper cone, and a magnet. They go together like this-- the magnet goes at the end of the cone, next put the copper wire at the wide part of the cone, then the copper wire is pulled to the magnet. This causes the cone to vibrate, and make sound. The sound should only go in the direction where the cone is wide. Like on a speaker you will see that the cone side is fabric and the others are enclosed in wood or plastic. Good speakers are often made of wood because it vibrates less than plastic. Plywood, and other composites are easier to make into speakers than making it out of boards because they can be shaped easier. Speakers can be made out of metal, but it is expensive and heavy. Concrete and stone would be good materials to build speaker boxes but its to hard to make the speakers.
The materials inside the speaker are important for the speaker quality as well. Damping is getting rid of an echo or distortion in a speaker. This is done by filling the speaker with stuffing, such as foam, wool, fabric, and more soft objects. Get rid of echos and distortion makes good speaker quality.
CONCLUSION:
The shape, size, and the materials all affect the speaker quality. The best shape is a egg shaped
speaker. The bigger the speaker the better. And the best material to make your speaker from is plywood. With these tips, you can get the best speaker ever.
